THE CONCEPT OF REDUCING COMPLEXITY

THE CONCEPT OF REDUCING COMPLEXITY

THE BONEBRIDGE CONCEPT

We firmly believe that less is usually more. All our efforts revolve around reducing complexity — a concept which requires us to identify and eliminate redundancy and say no to projects with no or too little patient benefit.

FRACTURE CARE

Fifty years ago, the then new implants for fracture care, developed by the AO/ASIF Foundation in Switzerland, drove a paradigm shift from conservative to operative fracture fixation. They thus paved the way for better and more efficient fracture care.

Today we know that fractures generally heal well. Healing depends on many factors: firstly, on the patients and their possible co-morbidities as well as the site and type of the fracture; secondly, on the decision making, indication, and technical care of the surgeon. The implants themselves still do play a role, but a lot of the emphasis has shifted to their ease of use.

INNOVATION BY REDUCING COMPLEXITY

Improvements are still being made to the already very sophisticated products in the market. However, they are generally incremental.

Therefore, until a truly innovative approach changes the current practice in orthopaedic trauma – potentially eradicating plates, screws, and nails – our improvements should focus on providing a high standard of clinical performance in the most efficient manner.

To achieve this, we must do more with less. At Bonebridge, we try to keep our osteosynthesis systems as simple as possible, and we provide minimal yet comprehensive instrument sets for their application. Furthermore, we keep our processes within our company lean and interact as directly as possible with physicians and hospital staff.

The close collaboration with clinical practice is not only the basis for any product improvements, but it is the most important element in developing new products to address clinical problems.

THE CONCEPT IN PRACTICE

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

REDUCING COMPLEXITY IN DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT

To reduce complexity in design and development, we work in small development teams. We strive to collaborate with surgeons that have a demonstrated clinical as well as academic record in the field concerned. We feel that small teams with highly capable team members are more likely to agree on a new concept (e.g. TAMINA TF) than larger development teams, which tend to look for broad consensus. The close interaction between the clinical expert group and our experienced development team helps to substantially speed up the process from a clinical problem to a marketable product. Depending on regulatory approval, we aim to get clearance within one year of the project kick-off.

IMPLANTS

REDUCING COMPLEXITY AT THE LEVEL OF THE IMPLANTS

The number of stock keeping units in orthopaedic trauma is high. An increasing number of different variants of the same implant are made available to specifically address every imaginable fracture pattern. This in turn puts a high burden on hospital logistics and imposes substantial cost. Bonebridge strives to design its implants in a way that allows for many fracture patterns to be addressed with only a very limited number of implant variants. This is a cornerstone of our concept we like to highlight. Users of our products know that we may not have a specific solution for every rare fracture pattern; nevertheless, we have considered how exactly this fracture pattern can be reliably treated with our implants.

REDUCING COMPLEXITY IN THE OR

Instrument sets in orthopaedic trauma have become extensive, and instrumentation itself has become a business model. While some of the numerous instruments may be useful for particular procedures, we feel that instrument sets should be designed to cover a maximum of different indications with a minimum of instruments. This in turn increases instrument turn-over, reduces errors, increases reproducibility, and allows for a steep learning curve for both the surgical residents and nursing staff.

INTERACTION

REDUCING COMPLEXITY BETWEEN CLINICIANS & THE COMPANY

Bonebridge is a physician-led company and is committed to be close to clinical practice. We make sure to keep the interaction between clinicians and our decision makers as straightforward and direct as possible. We strive to remain a company that is easily approachable and open for any ideas that aim at addressing a clinical problem.

THE ELEMENTS OF THE CONCEPT

PLATES

Bonebridge implants are designed to reduce complexity. We offer a simplified implant portfolio ready to treat the most common fracture patterns.

SCREWS

Bonebridge screws are made of stainless steel and are available in two diameters (2.5mm and 3.5mm) to match the corresponding plates in the Bonebridge portfolio.

INSTRUMENTS

Bonebridge instrument sets are optimized to provide the surgeon with exactly what is needed to place the implants — and not more.
